Class Description:

Watercolor Painting with Juan Pena! Juan will be demonstrating in watercolor on a full sheet watercolor paper. Students can work in the medium and size of their choice, because what Juan teaches applies to all media. Students that want to paint in watercolor only need three tubes of watercolor. (Juan’s watercolor material list is provided below and on his website -https://www.paintwithjuan.com/ ) 

Schedule:

  • Sunday April 28th 10AM - 4PM - In gallery with lunch break (45 minutes)
  • Monday April 29th and Tuesday April 30th - 10AM - 4PM will be on-location weather permitting  (location to be announced) Students can paint along with Juan or paint on their own and Juan will critique their work.

Students can attend on just one day (Sunday) or all three days. 

Students must supply their own painting materials.

What will students learn in this workshop

  • To create awesome paintings, students only need THREE colors of paint plus white. Juan will introduce three auxiliary colors and their benefits. 
  • The secret formula to art will be revealed from Juan’s book "The Miracle Three". 
  • Students will learn how the numbers three, five and seven help to paint better paintings. 
  • Students will work in the gallery on the first day (Sunday) at the Redwood Art Association Gallery.

We will start at 10 AM promptly and end about 4 PM each day. On Monday and Tuesday, we will be painting outside, weather permitting, at different local locations. (locations to be disclosed later).

This workshop is open to all ages, (minors under 12 must be accompanied by an adult). Our workshop is designed for all levels. You will take your own paintings home.

Juan Peña’s Materials List

BRUSHES:

I will be using the following: (Golden Fleece brushes from Cheap Joes)

  • flat brush (assorted sizes & with scraping handle)
  • Large flat wash brush, 1-2 inch
  • Large round brushes, assorted sizes.
  • White sable rigger #6 & #4
  • Loose Goose #5

PAPER:

A sketch pad or book of white bond paper 8 ½” x 11” (or larger) for notes and sketches

I will be using the following:

  • Full sheet of watercolor paper 300 lb. 22”x 30” (I will demonstrate on a full sheet- students can use 1/2 or 1/4 sheet)
  • D’Arches, Fabriano or half sheets of 25” x 40” single elephant D’Arches 260 lb. (20” x 25”) I will explain at the workshop.
  • (Students can use 140 lb. cold press full sheet (22" x 30") watercolor paper cut into quarter sheets (11" x 15")

BACKING BOARD:

  • A board for your watercolor paper. Tempered one side Masonite board if possible.
  • Board size should be 1” bigger than the paper size you use. (For the workshop, students can use a board size for a half sheet or quarter sheet)

PAINTS:

Winsor/Newton or Holbein – no substitutions.

Winsor/Newton

  • Winsor red
  • Winsor blue (reddish tint)
  • Holbein Permanent Yellow Deep

Optional colors:

  • Holbein Permanent Lemon Yellow
  • Holbein Permanent Violet
  • Quinactridone magenta (any brand)
  • Holbein Chinese white (any brand)

PALETTE:

  • Any white tray, like a Butcher’s tray, plastic mixing tray or white plastic watercolor palette

OTHER SUGGESTED ITEMS:

  • Four clips or masking tape to hold down paper (plan to hold down the corners of your paper)
  • A soft pencil and a kneaded eraser.
  • A small sponge, paper towels or toilet tissue and soap.
  • Two water containers.
  • One plastic bag for garbage.

    Please note there are 4 ticket options! A 3-day ticket for members , a 3-day ticket for non-members, a 1 day ticket for members, and a 1-day ticket for non-members. Redwood Art Association (RAA) Members select one of the member ticket. If you are NOT an RAA member - select the non-member ticket (your ticket price will include a 1 year membership)
